Global Muslim Mummy – Aasiya

The GLOBAL MUSLIM MUMMY series is proving to be extremely popular, and at the same time, very entertaining and enlightening. Our next contributor is a fellow blogging mum who is also a homeschooling mum. Aasiya is a 30 yr old mum of 3 children, and she resides in Mississauga, Toronto. Aasiya describes it as a very diverse city with an excellent Muslim community.

1. How many children do you have, and how old are they?

Three. Ages 9, 6, 3 years

2. What was your first reaction when you found out you were going to be a mum?

Excited and blessed.

3. What was the most difficult part of your pregnancy?

Extreme nausea. I was medicated, hospitalized, and very weak throughout most of all three pregnancies.

4. How did you decide on your childrens names?

I wanted names with inspirational stories. We chose Yusuf, Ibraheem and Summaiya.

5. How would you describe your parenting style?

Laid back, attachment.

6. What has been the most challenging part of being a parent?

Staying consistent with routines and guidelines. We’ve moved seven times and two countries in the last nine years.

7. What’s been the most rewarding part of being a parent?

The love I get from my kids. Also learning and growing as an individual.

8. How does being a Muslim influence your parenting decisions?

We as Muslims follow the guidelines of Allah within all aspects of our lives so the first criteria to making a decision in parenting would be, does this please Allah?

9. How do you instill Islamic identity into your children, in terms of lifestyle, education ect?

By trying to be a good example and remembering we are raising future adults inshallah.

10. As a parent, what is the most oft-repeated dua that you make for your children?

               Rabbana hab lana min azwajini wa dhurityatina min qurratul ain                 wa jalana lil mutaqeena imaama

11. What advice would you offer to other parents?
Try to enjoy each moment as much as possible… they grow too fast!

This is a dua from the Quraan, Surah Furqan, ayah 74 (Quraan 25:74)

Translation: “Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous.”


Jazakallah for sharing Aasiyah 🙂 and Im sure all parents can relate to that moment of relief when the kids are finally asleep!
