In my previous post, we discussed a few favourites from children regarding the types of foods they like for Suhoor. As almost all mentioned a type of cereal, its easy to recognise the need for nutritious foods, more especially for children who are attempting to fast for the first time. Even for those, who have fasted previously, eating healthily is still an essential part of Suhoor.
They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and registered SA dietician, Kelly Francis, for Kellogg’s Breakfasts For Better Day strongly agrees: “Children must focus on putting the right nutrients in their bodies as soon as they wake up to ensure they can learn and grow.”
She says breakfast provides the body and brain with fuel after an overnight fast – that’s where its name originates, breaking the fast! Without breakfast the body is effectively running on empty, it’s like trying to start a car with no petrol!”
Studies indicate that breakfast helps children feel more alert and be in a better mood in the morning. That first meal of the day supports concentration in the classroom and helps fuel physical activity on the playing field which can translate into more fun. Breakfast intake has also been associated with improved memory, test grades and school attendance.
When children are fasting, it becomes even more of a priority to give them the correct nutritional boosts. Some children will even be writing exams during Ramadaan, and not to mention the parents who will also be going to work and/or just trying to keep up with the family’s needs during the month of Ramadaan.
One of the best ways in which to ensure that young children, in fact all members of the family, are properly equipped to feel the spiritual aspect of the fast adequately, is to ensure that healthy food is eaten at the times of suhoor and iftaar. Kelloggs is the world’s leading cereal company, and all of their cereals are nutritionally balanced, and would be an ideal addition to any families suhoor. At Kelloggs they are driven to enrich and delight the world through foods and brands that matter. The most popular brands – Kellogg’s®, Corn Flakes, All-Bran®, Special K®, Rice Krispies®, Coco Pops®, Frosties®, Strawberry Pops®– nourish families so they can flourish and thrive. Having such a variety available ensures that theres always something to satisfy even the pickiest eater, and all tastebuds. Of my the reasons I love Kelloggs so much, is because of the convenience it affords a busy household!
With Ramadaan just around the corner, Kelloggs have generously sponsored a competition, where one lucky person gets a chance to win a hamper valued at R300-00! To enter competition, simply comment with the name of your favourite Kelloggs cereal. That’s it!
This competition is open to entrants in South Africa, and Kelloggs will be solely responsible for delivery of prize.
