Sunday things…

Between work and kids and home, mums rarely take time off for themselves. But this weekend Alhamdulillah, I managed to find a small chunk of time to indulge my creativity.

I’ve always enjoyed baking and take pride in some of the novelty cakes I’ve made for the children. A mini-putt putt course; butterfly; flower; space ship; lego cake; and a handbag to name a few. But all of these were done with butter icing and piping. I’ve always wanted to try fondant though, but for some reason imagined it to be exceptionally difficult. And then… After perusing Pinterest, I found the most wonderful fondant recipe, and decided to give it a go!

The recipe is as follows:

1 packet white marshmallows (recipe said 16 ounces)
1 to 4 tablespoons water
1kg icing sugar.

Melt mashmallows with a tblsp water in microwave on medium heat at 20 second intervals, stirring well between each heating. Add more water if necessary. Then add in half amount of icing sugar, and start kneading. Its very sticky, so coat hands well! Keep adding icing sugar is half cups until you get required (play dough like) consistency.
The measurement for the icing sugar is an estimation depending on the brand you’re using/humidity ect. If you find its gotten too tough, add in an extra tsp of water, if its still too soft, add in more icing sugar. Once its made, knead thoroughly! It took me about 10 minutes until I was happy with the result. Add in colouring, as required, and continue kneading. It took about 10 min to get a good workable fondant. refrigerate for about 30 min, then roll out as required.

As the kids start actual exams this week, I decided to use bright colours and a funky decorative style, to make something light and happy to ease the stress. Then to indulge myself I tried to style some flowers, and placed these in the centre. And this was the result!

Definitely worth making again, and something I am surely going to do for Eid InShaAllah!
